ZANI – The 66 & The Great Shakes

Of all the articles I write for various publications this one always gives me the most satisfaction each week.  Sunday mornings are now spent fine tuning who I am going to feature.  Much can depend on my current mood musically, as much as the content that comes my way.  After the more relaxed feel of the previous two posts it's time to get back to some good old fashioned Rock and Roll this week.
 
The66
 
This bunch of reprobates from the Northwest have been on my radar for the last two years.  Steadily building on a great live show and producing some storming demos.  Now finally they have released an e.p on their own label "Rum as Sin".  Recorded at the legendary "Vibe Studios", following in the footsteps of such luminaries as The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and New Order.  Martin Coogan, older brother of Steve Cougan and the studio's owner and former "Mock Turtles" frontman, approached them after a raucous live show. Entitled "Vibe" the e.p is a fair representation of the bands 21st Century interpretation of the spirit of 60's Psychedelic rock. Tracks such as "Firefly" show the full potential of the band who are best served live.

The Great Shakes

I often overlook the bands from my home City of Norwich, many of whom are just bubbling beneath the surface.  The Great Shakes fit into this category I have known them for eons, and our paths have crossed twice in the last couple of weeks.  They delivered great support slots to both Local Natives and Reverend & The Makers as well as an industry showcase at the 100 Club this week.  They are on the edge of a Pop/Indie crossover vibe for me.  Lead singer Dan Folden has more than a passing reference to Damon Albarn in his vocal delivery.  Musically at times there is a real 60's pop throwback on tracks like "It Won't Stop" through to the Blur like "Tomorrow Never Comes". They have a growing fanbase in Norwich and beyond again built like The 66 UK and getting out there and playing live.
