Do you ever listen to an album and think man this is just so good? For me this was the case with the latest release from Husky rescue. The promise the band showed on the previous two albums have all come wrapped up in this one and then some. This is an early contender for album of the year! It’s beauty personified. Simplistic yet full of layered complexity. All the dreamy wintry sparse soundscapes are still there in abundance but with added accessibility. Somehow they have managed to do this without compromise, and this artful mix of different styles is to be applauded.
So what box do we fit Rescue Husky into? I’m not sure, but there are shades of early Goldfrapp on the fantastically minimal sounds of “Wolf Trap Motel” through to any number of new wave pop artists on tracks like “Sound of Love” and “We Shall Burn Bright”. You see, this body of work ebbs and flows in almost perfect measure. That’s part of the appeal of this collection, the sequencing of tracks make it a proper album. For that songwriter Marko Nyberg earns my plaudits.
From opener “First Call” through to closing track “Beautiful My Monster”, it will have you in a dreamlike trance. Push me to pick a track and I will go with the aforementioned “Beautiful My Monster” as a perfect mix of minimalism with pop sensibilities. Out now on Catskill Records, it’s everything and more that I want from an album.
