Sitting down this Easter weekend I spent a long time staring at the blank screen in front of me. In fact I found no inspiration at all, sometimes you just need that little something to kickstart your creative flow. I found it in the aptly named Sensorites hailing from Stoke but now part of the exciting scene that is coming forward from the Northwest. These brothers had slipped under my net and nestled in the depths of my inbox, I am so glad that I revisited these boys. Welcome to the life-affirming, soul searching sound of Sensorites; perfectly encapsulated in their debut single Spacemen. It is released in the UK & Ireland on 26th April 2010 on Hollowhole Records. Sensorites are brothers Natham & Gareth Kirkham, they work and write from their own studio also aptly named ‘The Batcave’, which promises to turn into something more like ‘The Hit Factory’ once this gets out. Like a lot of brothers from up north, passion abounds from their heartfelt tunes which have all the pop sensibilities of other Scouse masters from The La’s, Shack, The Coral and The Zutons through to Lightning Seeds, Cast and Gomez. Lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Natham says: “Spacemen is a social comment on the impression of freedom. Waiting for the kettle to boil I found myself playing what is now 'Spacemen' on guitar. My brother’s head turns; he grabs his bass & joins in. I start singing & the words flow. We finish, I rush for a pen & capture the lyrics before they disappear.”
So that was one band taken care of for Dig the New Breed this week. The second artist came from a gig I attended last night in Norwich. You know I talk about it so much but often you find the artists that make your night further down the bill. James Eliot Taylor is a shining example of this I have a real love of singer songwriters and clever lyrics. James is an artist you need to pay full attention to if you want to catch the full lyrical irony of his pen. Using a collective of musicians from great bands Tin Man and the Lost Levels as backing band last night, I was totally enchanted from the first track. I had one of those lightbulb in the head moments, his songs are both uplifting and dark and melancholic in equal measure. For me James is a very talented guy reminding me of Fionn Regan especially on the strangely entitled track " Artichoke Stew " about an imaginary romantic encounter. My essential new artist this week, James, is an artist whose style of Nu-folk/Americana looks set to propel him into your living room before the end of 2010, unsigned, but not for long one would imagine.
