While headlines are dominated by the ways in which technological trends have transformed how we live, work, eat, fight and love, another quieter revolution is taking place that hasn't gotten the attention it deserves: the ways in which we, as humans, are entertained has changed immensely.

We aren't just talking about how you can watch TV on your phone now - that's obvious. What has truly changed is how we shape our lives around entertainment and how, for the first time in recorded history, we can say we live in a post-boredom society.

This isn't a Luddite piece on how we should all go back to the days of gramophones and silent pictures - rather, an assessment of how trends in entertainment technology have reshaped our interactions and how our society functions. Read on to find out more.

We're All Entertainers Now

This is perhaps the greatest way in which changes to entertainment technology have shifted how we avoid boredom. We have all become content creators, no longer relying on billion-dollar film studios and publishing houses to provide us with the entertainment we crave.

Instead, we look to those we know and we take pleasure from the mundane. We watch normal people play video games on Twitch, tune in by the millions to watch "influencers" discuss their shopping trips on Instagram Live and constantly broadcast ourselves in the hopes that our followers will find us entertaining.

Hierarchies have been flattened and the scope of what counts as entertainment has been broadened to include just about anything - including ourselves.

Our Standards Are Higher Than Ever

The other revolution concerns how we select our entertainment. Whether it's playing games in a casino, watching a film or heading to a bar, no-one even considers making a choice without consulting the vast library of reviews that both critics and the general public are continuously publishing. We feel our time is precious, so we certainly wouldn't want to waste it watching a film with a Rotten Tomatoes score of less than 80%. Entertainment producers live or die by the reviews people leave.

We can look, too, to the modern arena of online casino gaming. Casino app Mr Green features hundreds of slots and card games in one place, but one key to it maintaining success is a strong average rating from users, with reviews available in the very place from which we download the app. Our entertainment, whether it's an online casino or a new book, has to be widely reviewed in a positive light before we will even consider consuming it.

Entertainment is Constant

Finally, the most important way that technology has transformed entertainment is in terms of volume and accessibility. Entertainment in all of its myriad forms is now more or less constantly beamed towards us. There's no escaping it and to be bored is now a practical impossibility for most.

For better or for worse, there's always an engaging distraction waiting to occupy our attention. Entertainment is freely available to anyone with a computer or smartphone and it takes a degree of effort to not be entertained. This is perhaps the greatest way in which society and its relationship with recreation have changed.

You can read these observations either as praise of technological achievement or a warning against a possible dystopian future. Either way, there's no denying that we're a society in flux and that these changes will undoubtedly have huge implications on how we behave and interact with each other long into the future.
