France produced a magnificent display to topple Argentina in the last 16 of the World Cup and they are now among the favourites for glory. Optimism is swelling among fans as this golden generation of superstars looks set to finally deliver on its huge promise. Les Bleus made the final of Euro 2016, but lost out to Portugal after extra-time. Now Didier Deschamps men could go one better by conquering the world, as they are playing with flair, power, dynamism and vitality and they will fear no one heading into the latter stages of the tournament.
Their 4-3 victory over Argentina on Saturday was the best game of the World Cup so far. Les Bleus occasionally looked sloppy at the back, but Argentina are blessed with world class forwards and they are always dangerous. Yet France dominated the game and they were good value for the win. N’Golo Kante and Paul Pogba won the midfield battle, and France were utterly exhilarating in attack. Kylian Mbappe has been unplayable at times and he now looks set to go on and become a world-beater.

On Saturday, he became the first teenager to score two goals in a World Cup knockout match since Pele in 1958, and we all know how that ended. Mbappe is deadly in front of goal, but he is so much more than a mere predator. He is outrageously dynamic in the box, and he has the ability to frighten the life out of defenders by charging at them with the ball at his feet. Mbappe is a magnificent athlete and he has won two Ligue 1 titles in a row, first with Monaco and then with PSG, all before his 20th birthday.

He is a perfect symbol of this quick, powerful, dynamic and exciting French team. Mbappe, Olivier Giroud and Antoine Griezmann ripped Argentina apart time and time again in their last 16 clash, and any team in the world would struggle to deal with their physicality and ingenuity on the ball. Check out a review of betting websites, find the best odds on the market and you will see that France are now the second favourites to win the World Cup, behind only Brazil in the betting. But they look so much more exciting than Brazil.

Tite has Neymar and Philippe Coutinho at his disposal, but you can now make a compelling case for Mbappe to be rated higher than that dynamic duo. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were both eliminated from the tournament on the same day, and it is time for a changing of the guard in world football. Many see Neymar as the man most likely to take up the mantle as the world’s best when the powers of Messi and Ronaldo start to wane, but Mbappe looks like the better player. He regularly upstaged Neymar when they played alongside one another at PSG last season, and he has vastly outshone him at this World Cup.

The Brazilians have a terrific midfield, but no team in the world can match the steel and dynamism of Kante and Pogba. There are some great teams left in the tournament, but France look extremely devastating in attack and very strong in midfield and they could seize glory if they tighten up at the back. It will be fascinating to see how the rest of the tournament pans out, but it would not be surprising to see Mbappe and co holding the famous trophy aloft in a couple of weeks’ time. It would take a magnificent effort to stop them as they are in extremely good form right now.
