High Voltage Festival – A Prog Rocking Good Time

The inaugural High Voltage Festival in Victoria Park turned out to be a cracking celebration of unfashionable rock acts, new metal and a fantastic resurrection of progressive rock music.

You’ve owned records by some bands for years. You might occasionally play them amidst a wave of nostalgia. You might venture out to see them play live ‘just one more time’, but there’s always the danger that you’ll be disappointed. That the band who provided the soundtrack to your formative years aren’t as good as you remembered. That they can’t quite cut it any more.

Bob Morris -I was the Fifth Libertine -Two Years with the Band

Well, not exactly the 5th – about 11th – but certainly in the squad. It’s funny but when I did university, one of the few lectures I actually turned up for and enjoyed was about group dynamics and the sum of the parts being bigger than the whole: that’s the key to all the best bands I’ve ever liked. Weller was never as (consistently) good as The Jam, and Strummer and Jones, Brown, yes yes, they’ve all made some blinding stuff afterwards but what can compare with what they did in the band… why?
