Where Malice Grew (A Modern Poem)

Written by Elaine McGinty

In the end
The visionary was broken
Not by fire and might
But the bland
Indifference of those who shied
From helping to carry the light

From comfort zone to new world
A leap too far
A slow hand clap
Along a dual carriageway
In a new car
Past chain stores
With coffee beans on their signs
And betting shops
Where slips of broken promise
And shattered dream
Fly in slipstreams of the
Communal sigh of disappointment
We call breathing in and out
Where nothing ever happens here
Nothing ever happens
And in happening its own threat
A slice of light that looks
Suspiciously like a scalpel
To cut away the mundane shell
Where malice grew
And bring the people to the well
Where drinking of the rebels brew
Can free them from the yoke of you

But that brief flash, spark alight
Is but three minutes long
On internet radio
A nostalgic protest song
God forbid we act out lyrics
Meant to stir us to ballot box
But lead instead
To online
Tax free
